A very good, common sense article that takes into account the strong genetic component of animal behavior.
On a slightly different subject, is it still possible to find a GSD that looks like they did 40 years ago (without the severely sloping hips)? I don’t like to see a dog stand that way. It looks like the dog’s cowering. My dog, imported from Germany in the early 60′s, stood up straight like any other dog. It seems the breeders have bred that capability out of GSDs. Very sad.

Dear Ms. Tiz, I found much of interest reading your view on drives, thresholds and nerves in your article ‘Elements of Temperament’. Thank you. I would much appreciate if I could use some extracts from it when I do an article on Temperament for our Western Province Rottweiler Club news magazine in Cape Town. Much of what you stated, can be very sensibly applied to the Rottweiler too. I’ll make sure that wherever I quote you, I’ll mention you by name (and mail you a copy of it.)
Thanks, and your favourable consent will be much appreciated.

I have been seriously involved in GSD’S since 1954… I truly enjoyed your information on the Temperament and Character of the Greatest and Most Intelligent Breed , the One and Only German Shepherd… You have a Great Insight into the temperament and character of the GSD..I am working on My Book of the German Shepherd.. I have lived with them ALL of My Life, and was one of the First breeders in the USA to stress the importance of bringing in the West German Bloodlines into American Bred GSD’S… I would like to draw attention to your book, with your permission of course, on my website and emails.. I would appreciate your permission to do so, with acknowledgment to you, of course!! Thank You… Barbara Lee Williams … Breeder/ Pro Handler/Confirmation Judge of GSD”S, etc.

That’s a whole article in itself. Personally, I wouldn’t buy from a breeder who isn’t active in Schutzhund at a good club. And I’d want to get to know both parents really well as well as the bloodline.

I only deal with European bloodline GSDs, btw.

Wonderful article on dog, and specifically GSD temperament! Now, how does one identify “real GSD breeders?” My friend, who found an absolute jewel of GSD temperament in a bitch puppy from a byb sought her next GSD from what she thought were qualified breeders, and wound up with a very pretty nut case, who eventually had to be put down.

I am the president of Coeur d’Alene Dog Fanciers. I read your wonderful article on temperment that I found on facebook. I would like your permission to print it in our club newsletter that goes to about 80 families in our area. We have several people who have GSD’s and we also have several GSD’s that come through our training classes. I think that we could all benefit from reading it.
    Thank you,
    Michaelle Sande
