None Dare Call it Terrorism

The “vibrant” local Muslim community in Killeen, Texas is outraged at the suggestion that Maj Hasan’s terrorist attack on Ft.  Hood could be even tenuously connected to radical Islam, according to the NYT.

When a white guy shoots up a post office, they call that going postal,” said Victor Benjamin II, 30, a former member of the Army. “But when a Muslim does it, they call it jihad.

Uh huh.

Isn’t it the very definition of terrorism when a fanatic attacks a place that should be the most secure:  a military processing center.  Is that not the whole point of terrorist attacks; to destabilize and create profound fear in the general population?  Once a setting as secure as a military base is breached, we can’t feel safe anywhere anymore.

Isn’t that the point?

Is that definition not exactly the same as when the FBI releases reports such as the one released on 8 November, 2007, stating that al Qaeda was planning to attack shopping malls during the Christmas season. Useful intelligence is not broadcast over the airways, which make this seem like a scare tactic also. We are surrounded by terrorist attacks from those we trust and those we do not, because reports like that do one thing, “destabilize and create profound fear in the general population.”
