Interestingly (to me, at least), when he was elected I told my kids it was a great day for America. They received that skeptically since I’d spent the last few months campaigning against him, but I insisted it was true. Just a generation after African Americans were physically attacked for trying to vote, we had elected one to the highest post in the land. That was the first and last time I thought of Obama in terms of race.
