Everybody has one–an elderly relative who has lost all sense of tact and decorum. The peerless Estelle Getty was the archetype of the embarrassing nutty older relative when she played Bea Arthur’s mom on the Golden Girls.
Getty popped off with whatever happened to be on her mind at the moment. Her excuse was that in old age, the part of her brain that knew to keep certain thoughts to herself no longer functioned. When the talented Getty did it, we found it hilarious.
When Helen Thomas does it, we find it horrifying. Thomas, who has a history of criticizing Israel for its dogged insistence in its right to exist, has told the Jews to “get the hell out” of Gaza and go back to Germany and Poland.
The grand dame of left wing journalism is still employed.
Unlike Bea Arthur’s character on the Golden Girls, nobody in Thomas’ orbit has rushed forth to apologize and attempt to explain her outburst.
If appropriate meds don’t do the trick, it’s long past time for Thomas to head for Shady Pines.

Now that Helen Thomas has been dropped by her Speakers Bureau after these comments and has made a public apology, GMarks and Jack T should be aware that the region now known as Israel has been a home to the Jews for three thousand years. Now, as an independent state, They have every right to defend their borders. They have suffered attacks from Gaza for the last 60 years, and seem to encourage more attacks every time they give away more real estate.
